PREFACE Preface
This book describes the IBM(*) Local Area Network Support Program Custom
Version 1.01. This version is legally licensed to be used only with the
token-ring network adapter with which the LAN Support Program Custom is
shipped. The LAN Support Program Custom is designed to support this
adapter. If you need certain functions that the LAN Support Program
Custom does not provide, you will need to use the stand-alone version of
the LAN Support Program Version 1.3 or higher. See "Using a Stand-Alone
Version of the LAN Support Program" in topic 1.1 for more information.
A README.LSP file is provided with the LAN Support Program Custom files to
supply additional information.
PREFACE.1 Who Should Use This Book
Network planners, network administrators, and operators who configure,
install, or operate the LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01 should use
this book. To use it effectively, you may need the installation and
testing instructions for the adapter and the manuals for the application
programs you plan to use.
PREFACE.2 How This Book Is Organized
This book explains how to configure and use the LAN Support Program Custom
Version 1.01.
Chapter 1 describes the LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01 and what
you need to use it.
Chapter 2 explains how to use the Installation Aid to install the LAN
Support Program Custom.
Chapter 3 explains how to install the LAN Support Program Custom manually.
Chapter 4 describes the device driver parameters and includes a summary of
the device driver files.
Chapter 5 contains suggestions for using DOS 5.0, Microsoft Windows(**),
or Quarterdeck Extended Memory Manager 386(**) (QEMM-386(**)) with the LAN
Support Program Custom Version 1.01.
Chapter 6 contains suggestions for problem determination and
recommendations for handling unusual configurations.
Appendix A lists the messages that may be returned when the program is
loaded.

The IBM(*) Local Area Network Support Program Custom Version 1.01 is
designed and legally licensed to support network application programs on
the token-ring network adapter with which the LAN Support Program Custom
is shipped. It provides the IEEE 802.2 interface and can also be
configured to provide the Network Basic Input/Output System (NETBIOS)
interface for this adapter. It uses less memory than previous stand-alone
versions of the LAN Support Program.
LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01 supports only one adapter
installed on the computer; this adapter may be configured as the primary
or the alternate adapter.
See Figure B-1 in topic B.0 for a diagram showing the paths by which
information is transported from an application program through the LAN
Support Program Custom to an adapter and back again.
1.1 Using a Stand-Alone Version of the LAN Support Program
You should use the LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01 to support the
adapter, unless you need one of the following functions:
° the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) interface
° support for the 3270 Workstation Program
° support for two adapters
° maximum values for LAN Support Program device driver parameters or for
NETBIOS parameters.
For these functions, you must use the LAN Support Program Version 1.3 or
higher stand-alone version of the program. This stand-alone version of
the program is not provided with these adapters and must be purchased
separately.
1.1.1 NDIS Interface
The LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01 is not designed to support the
NDIS interface. If you need the NDIS interface, you must use the DOS NDIS
MAC device driver, which is supplied with the adapter, and a stand-alone
version of the LAN Support Program.
1.1.2 NETBIOS Parameters
With LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01, when many additional SAPs
and link stations are configured, you may use up the work area. If you
attempt to use the LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01 and you get the
error message DXMT0 31E: or your application program fails to run, you may
need to use one of the stand-alone versions. See "Work Area
Considerations for LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01" in topic 4.7.
You may be able to use LAN Support Program Custom if you can reduce your
NETBIOS parameters without affecting the performance of your network. If
you are not running a LAN server application, you may want to investigate
the need for large NETBIOS parameters.
1.1.3 For More Information
Refer to the Local Area Network Program User's Guide that is provided with
the stand-alone program.
1.2 What You Need
To use the LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01, you need:
° The LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01 Program Diskette. This is
the diskette on which the LAN Support Program Custom files are
located. You should make a backup copy of this diskette using the DOS
DISKCOPY command.
° An ISA-bus computer with one supported adapter installed.
° The following hardware items and network attachment:
- 30 KB of free memory is needed to load a typical configuration of
the LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01
NOTE: To run the Installation Aid for a typical configuration,
282 KB of free memory is required.
- A diskette drive
- A display
- A PC printer (optional)
- Attachment to a LAN.
° DOS 3.3 or higher
° One or more network application programs.
The LAN Support Program Custom provides an interface for two kinds of
network application programs:
- Programs written to the IEEE 802.2 interface
(such as Personal Communications/3270)
- Programs written to the NETBIOS interface (such as the PC Local
Area Network Program).
° A blank diskette if you plan to make the working copy (1) on a
diskette.
(1) A working copy is a copy of the program that has been
configured for use in a particular computer. The working
copy can be installed on a diskette or on a fixed disk.
1.2.1 The README.LSP File
The README.LSP file is an information file that is provided in the root
directory on the LAN Support Program Custom Program Diskette.
