3.0 Chapter 3. Manual Installation of the LAN Support Program Custom Version 1.01
The Installation Aid enables you to do a complete configuration,
including changing all the LAN Support Program Custom device driver
parameters. However, if you prefer to do a manual configuration, the
steps required to install the program are as follows:
1. Prepare your computer.
2. Copy the LAN Support Program Custom files to your working copy. (1)
3. Edit CONFIG.SYS to load the device drivers.
4. Change the device driver parameters, if required.
5. Restart the computer to load the working copy.
(1) A working copy is a copy of the program that has been
configured for use in a particular computer. The working
copy can be installed on a diskette or on a fixed disk.
3.1 Preparing the Computer
Follow these steps to prepare the computer:
1. If you will be starting the computer from a fixed disk, make sure that
DOS 3.3 or higher has been installed on the fixed disk. Use the DOS
VER command to check the DOS level. If you must reformat your fixed
disk, be sure to back up your files. See the IBM Personal Computer
Disk Operating System User's Guide for your version of DOS for
instructions.
2. If you will be starting the computer from a diskette (instead of a
fixed disk), be sure that you have a formatted diskette for use as the
working copy. It must be formatted as a DOS 3.3 or higher system
diskette. Use the DOS FORMAT command with the /S option to format it,
if it is not already formatted.
3.2 Copying the Files
The program files for the LAN Support Program Custom are found in the
root directory of the LAN Support Program Custom Program Diskette, which
is supplied with the adapter. You should make a backup copy of the LAN
Support Program Custom Program Diskette and use the backup copy as the
source diskette. See "Making a Backup Copy" in topic 2.2.2.
To create your working copy, set up a directory on the disk or diskette
you plan to use for the working copy. Copy these files to that directory:
° DXMA0MOD.SYS
° DXMC0MOD.SYS.
The driver named DXMT0MOD.SYS provides the NETBIOS interface. If you need
the NETBIOS interface, copy this file as well.
3.2.1 Copying DXM.MSG
If you are using U.S. English, copy the file DXM.MSG that is provided with
the LAN Support Program Custom. The version of DXM.MSG that is provided
with the program contains the LAN Support Program Custom device driver
messages in U.S. English.
If you are using a different language, you cannot use the DXM.MSG file
that is provided. To get the DXM.MSG file in the language you need, you
must copy DXMMSG.ccc under the name DXM.MSG. The letters ccc represent a
number that corresponds to one of the values used by the DOS COUNTRY
command that is defined in the IBM Personal Computer Disk Operating System
User's Guide for your version of DOS. LAN Support Program Custom Version
1.01 supports only Spanish, German, and Japanese. See "Parameter for the
Interrupt Arbitrator Device Driver (DXMA0MOD.SYS)" in topic 4.2 for a list
of the country codes for these languages.
To copy the message file, first select the supported value of ccc that
corresponds to the language you are using in DOS. For example, DXMMSG.034
is the message file for Spanish. Copy the desired file to the working
copy with the new name DXM.MSG.
NOTE: The correct message file must be copied and renamed DXM.MSG, or the
LAN Support Program Custom cannot be activated.
3.3 Editing CONFIG.SYS
In the following example, \LSP represents the directory in which the
working copy of the LAN Support Program Custom is located. You may
substitute another directory if you like.
Edit CONFIG.SYS to include the following lines:
DEVICE=\LSP\DXMA0MOD.SYS
DEVICE=\LSP\DXMC0MOD.SYS
If you plan to use the NETBIOS interface, also include the statement:
DEVICE=\LSP\DXMT0MOD.SYS
These statements may be entered anywhere in CONFIG.SYS but must be listed
in the order shown (DXMA0MOD.SYS first, then DXMC0MOD.SYS, and, last,
DXMT0MOD.SYS).
DXMA0MOD.SYS is the interrupt arbitrator for all the device driver files.
It has a language parameter (ccc) that defines the language in which
load-time messages are displayed. If this parameter is equal to 001, all
load-time messages are displayed in U.S. English.
If you are using a different language, this parameter must be the same as
the ccc file extension that identified the DXMMSG.ccc file you copied.
For example, if you specified the DXMA0MOD.SYS language parameter as 034
(for Spanish), you should copy the DXMMSG.034 message file and rename it
DXM.MSG. See "Parameter for the Interrupt Arbitrator Device Driver
(DXMA0MOD.SYS)" in topic 4.2 for a syntax diagram showing you how to enter
this parameter.
NOTE: The statements in CONFIG.SYS are different if you use a memory
manager. See Chapter 5, "Using DOS 5.0, Windows, and QEMM-386" for more
information.
3.3.1 Changing Parameters
The default values for the device driver parameters are usually
acceptable. If you need to alter some parameters, you can edit the
DEVICE= statements as described in Chapter 4, "Customizing the Device
Driver Parameters."
3.3.2 Tips for Editing CONFIG.SYS
Use the following tips to edit CONFIG.SYS:
° The DEVICE= line needs to include the path DEVICE=\LSP\DXM... where
\LSP represents the directory. You can substitute another directory
name in place of \LSP.
° Each DEVICE= line must not exceed one line in the CONFIG.SYS file.
° If the working copy already has a CONFIG.SYS file, be sure to change
only the lines needed for the LAN Support Program Custom device
drivers. For maximum safety, copy the original CONFIG.SYS file to a
file with a unique extension to save it before editing.
3.4 Loading the Working Copy
When you have completed the configuration of the working copy, load the
LAN Support Program Custom as follows:
° If the LAN Support Program Custom configuration was copied to a fixed
disk, remove any diskettes from the diskette drives and press the
Ctrl-Alt-Del keys to restart the computer.
° If the LAN Support Program Custom was copied to a diskette, insert
that diskette into the startup diskette drive (usually drive A:) and
press the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys to restart the computer.
A copyright statement will be displayed. Look for messages. If there are
no messages or if there are only information messages, the LAN Support
Program Custom is correctly loaded. If any error messages are displayed,
the LAN Support Program Custom may not be correctly installed; see
Appendix A, "Messages." For additional help, see Chapter 6,
"Recommendations and Problem Solving." If no LAN Support Program Custom
copyright statement is displayed, the LAN Support Program Custom is not
installed or has been removed. In this case, make a new backup copy and
reinstall the program.
