Abstract: SERVERAID: SOME PFA DRIVES CAUSE BOOT CONFIG MISMATCH

SYMPTOM:

The message and count down that says "Drive Configuration can take up to 6 minutes" Please wait
The count down takes longer than 4 minutes.

Then the message:

 Controller POST and Configuration Error Codes:
           ISPR=EF10, BCS=7, ECS=00.
 Unable to communicate with the following devices.
         (Channel: SID) (X:Y)
 Controller OK, Devices not responding check cable or enclosures.
 Press: F4 - Retry the command
        F10 - Exit without any change

Where X and Y are the Channel and ID of the PFA drive.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

•  The system is any of the following IBM servers:

          a Netfinity 7000-M10 server, Type 8680, any Model.
          a Netfinity 7000 server, Type 8651, any Model.
          a Netfinity 5500-M20 server, Type 8662, any Model.
          a Netfinity 5500-M10 server, Type 8661, any Model.
          a Netfinity 5500 server, Type 8660, any Model.
          a Netfinity 5000 server, Type 8659, any Model.
          a Netfinity 3500 server, Type 8644, any Model.
          a Netfinity 3000 server, Type 8476, any Model.
          a Netfinity 1000 server, Type 8477, any Model.
          a PC Server 704, Type 8650, any Model.
          a PC Server 520, Type 8641, any Model.
          a PC Server 330, Type 8640, any Model.
          a PC Server 325, Type 8639, any Model.
          a PC Server 320, Type 8640, any Model.
          a PC Server 315, Type 8638, any Model.
   

•  The system is configured with one of the following:

          Onboard ServeRAID
          a PC ServeRAID SCSI Adapter, Option P/N 70G8489
          a ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter, Option P/N 76H3584
          a Netfinity ServeRAID-3H Ultra2 SCSI Adapter, Option P/N 01K7207
          a Netfinity ServeRAID-3L Ultra2 SCSI Adapter, Option P/N 01K7364
   

•  The system is configured with one of the following Hard Disk Drives:

          a Netfinity 9.1GB 10,000rpm Wide Ultra SCSI Hot-Swap
            SCA-2 SL HDD, FRU P/N 10L6018
          a Netfinity 18.2GB 10,000rpm Wide Ultra SCSI Hot-Swap
            SCA-2 HDD, FRU P/N 10L6047
   

•  The system has the described symptom.

FIX:

Replace the PFA drive.

Note: The non responding drive described in the SYMPTOM section should be checked for PFA status.

•  This behavior will be corrected in a future release of the ServeRAID BIOS/Firmware.
•  The target date for the release is scheduled for:

    June 22, 1999.

•  It will be available from the following URL:

    search on "ServeRAID firmware"
    only get version 3.50.15 or higher.

  Notes:

  1.  Any corresponding text file is viewable on-line and may be printed.
  2.  To creating the BIOS/Firmware update diskette; the downloaded file is a self-extracting  executable file that will prompt for a diskette.
      Follow instructions on the display to create the diskette.

WORKAROUND:

If you get a "Configuration Change Error" when the system is warm booted, Select F4 (retry).

Note: Do NOT select F10 (no change).

DETAILS:

The drive is alerting the ServeRAID adapter of the PFA error before the adapter is set up to handle the alert correctly.

Note: Any Drive in a PFA state should be replaced as soon as possible.
