Abstract: NETFINITY 5500 & 5500-M10: USE OF SSA ADAPTERS

SYMPTOM:

System may be unreliable during heavy loading, Blue Screen may result.
Power may not be supplied to SSA adapter and hence it will not function.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

The system is one of the following Netfinity servers:

a Netfinity 5500 server, Type 8660, any Model.
a Netfinity 5500-M10 server, Type 8661, any Model.

The system is configured with one of the following:

IBM SSA RAID Adapter for PC Servers, Option P/N 32H3811
IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter for PC Servers, Option P/N 96H9835
IBM SerialRAID Adapter, Option P/N 09L2084

P/Ns affected:

Option kit P/N 32H3811 (7133 FC4011), Includes asm P/N 09L2066 and any future revisions
Option kit P/N 96H9835 (7133 FC4012), FRU P/N 09L2069: Includes asm P/N 09L5507 and any future revisions.
Option kit P/N 09L2084 (7133 FC4013), FRU P/N 09L2130: Includes asm P/N 09L5544 and any future revisions

FIX:

Ensure that no more than one (1) SSA adapter card is used on the primary bus
(PCI Bus/0, slots 5 and 6) of the Netfinity 5500 and Netfinity 5500-M10 Servers.

Ensure that the following SSA adapters are not used on the secondary bus
(PCI Bus/1, slots 1,2,3 and 4) of the Netfinity 5500 and Netfinity 5500-M10 Servers:

IBM SSA RAID Adapter for PC Servers, Option p/n32H3811
IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter for PC Servers, Option p/n96H9835

DETAILS:

If any of the referenced SSA adapters are being used in either the Netfinity 5500 or 5500 M10 servers, no more than one (1) SSA adapter should be installed on the primary bus slots (PCI bus/0, slots 5 and 6).
If an SSA adapter is installed on the primary bus, then no other PC adapters of any type should be used on the primary bus.

If more than one (1) SSA adapter is installed on the primary bus, or if another type of PC adapter is used on the primary bus as well as an SSA adapter, then under heavy loading the reliability of the system may be affected and a blue screen may result.

The following SSA adapters cannot be used in the secondary bus slots (PCI bus/1, slots 1,2,3 and 4) of either the Netfinity 5500 or 5500 M10 servers:

IBM SSA RAID Adapter for PC Servers, Option p/n32H3811 IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter for PC Servers, Option p/n96H9835

If either the IBM SSA RAID Adapter for PC Servers (Option p/n32H3811), or the IBM SSA RAID Cluster Adapter for PC Servers (Option p/n96H9835), are used in the secondary bus slots, and disks are attached to the adapter, then power will not be supplied to the adapters. Hence the adapters will not function.

Note: There are NO restrictions for using the IBM SerialRAID Adapter, Option p/n09L2084, on the secondary bus.
