Abstract: NETFINITY 5500: FIXES for Incomplete MICROCODE Flash
TEXT:
This Tip is provided as a Service Aid when attempting
to recover a Netfinity 5500 server Type 8660 after
a Microcode Flash of the Advanced Remote Management Processor
(aka Service Processor) has been interrupted, resulting in a
incomplete update of the Microcode.
The Microcode Flash may be locally or remotely applied.
The Microcode Flash ("Netfinity 5500 Advanced Remote Manager
update diskette version 1.00") updates the speeprom.pkt file
that resides in firmware of the Advanced Remote Management
Processor. The speeprom.pkt files contains the Operating System
code and Run-time code for the Advanced Remote Management Processor.
IF the Microcode Flash is interrupted when the speeprom.pkt
file is being updated, subsequent power-up / reboot of the
System results in the following error displayed on the screen:
"1601 Service Processor needs to be flashed"
The System will boot but will not function reliably due to the
Advanced Remote Management Processor functions are disabled.
Recovery requires re-applying the Microcode Flash. This may be
executed locally or remotely (remote* requires re-establishing
a remote connection to the Server).
The "Netfinity 5500 Advanced Remote Manager update
diskette version 1.00" is available for download from the
IBM Website at the following URL:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/files.html
Download details:
*If there was a password configured for previous remote
connectivity to the Advanced Remote Service Processor prior
to the speeprom.pkt update being interrupted, a subsequent
remote connection will no longer prompt for a password until
the flash has been completed, after which time a password may be configured.
NOTE: The Service Processor resides on the System Board, so there is
no effect on the Network Operating System or Data on the hard drives.
