Chapter 6. PCI bus parity checking and error handling
The PCI Specification contains parity checking for all address
and data information on the PCI bus. The PCI Specification also
allows the system to disable PCI Parity checking.
We suggest that for critical LAN attached systems, PCI parity
checking be enabled.
You may wish to verify with your system provider that PCI
parity checking, especially for all memory accesses, is provided
in the system. This generally requires that system memory be
parity protected, or ECC protected.
In addition to the PCI architected error checking, the Auto
LANStreamer PCI maintains parity checking throughout the
adapter's data path and buffers. This additional error checking
is always enabled, even if the system error checking is
disabled.
-----------------
The Auto LANStreamer PCI may not function correctly if the PCI
pins associated with parity checking error reporting (PERR#) are
left disconnected on the system board. The adapter will fail to
initialize if it senses continuous error indications on the PCI
bus, even with parity checking disabled. This problem has been
observed on one Zeos Pantera 90Mhz Pentium® system, and may or may
not exist on other systems. We have developed and tested an
adapter modification that corrects the problem by partially
disabling PCI parity checking on the adapter.
