Madge Smart / NetWare / OS/2
PROBLEM - When using the Madge ringnode Token Ring adapter with netware requester
for OS/2, one of the following problems may result:
1. the ODI device driver will fail to load,
2. the system will lock up, or
3. the adapter will fail to keep a connection to the network.
Machines AFFECTED - All Valuepoint systems.
SOLUTION - The Madge ringnode adapter must be set to both async and normal at bus
timing mode. These modes are set using the switch blocks on the adapter. even though
The switches are set correctly, the OS/2 ODI device driver overrides the async/sync
switch and places the adapter in sync mode. OEM adapters operating in synchronous mode
may have problems operating correctly in a Valuepoint system due to glitching on the ISA
sys_clk signal.
Workaround - Ensure that the switch settings for the adapter are set for async and
normal AT bus timing. In addition, Madge has a beta OS/2 ODI driver available that
fixes sync vs. async problem. Contact Madge technical support and mention the problem
to obtain a beta version of the OS/2 ODI driver.
Permanent fix - Madge plans on releasing the beta version of the OS/2 ODI driver it will
be generally available off the Madge BBS.
