Testing the IBM 8230 Base Unit

Testing the IBM 8230 Base Unit
After you have removed and replaced a FRU, or performed any other repair action, test the base unit.

Test the base unit before you reconnect the cables from the base unit to the token-ring network, unless you removed and replaced a LAM. If you replaced a LAM, got to step 5.

If you want to test the base unit before replacing it in the rack, leaving the Top and Front Covers off, reinstall the Copper or Fiber Modules, the Wrap Plug or media filter, and reconnect the Power Cord.

Perform the following steps to test the base unit:
  1.  Plug the Power Cord into the base unit and then into the ac power outlet.
  2.  Set the power switch to ON
  3.  Verify the LEDs on the front of the base unit are lit.
    1.  All of the LEDs on the front of the base unit will lit for appr. 6 seconds after you turn the power on.  Make sure that each LED is lit.
    2.  Verify that the power (1 0) LED remains lit. If the power (1 0) LED is not lit, check that:
      •  The power switch is set to ON
      •  The Power Cord connections are seated correctly.
      •  The power source is working correctly.
  4.  After you turn on the power, the base unit runs diagnostics for appr. 60 seconds. During that time, initialization codes  X'80'-X'8F' will be displayed in sequence on the error code display. Then, the error code display should be blank, with no error code displayed.  The error code display remains blank during normal operation of the IBM 8230, except for occasional status codes that are displayed. (see ERROR/STATUS tables below)
  5.  Verify that all LEDs are in the correct state. When diagnostics are complete, each LED on the base unit should be in the  state indicated in the following table.

LED STATE
1 0 On
OK On
1 - 4 see Note
Wrap RI On - If RI module is optical fiber
Off - If RI module is copper
Wrap RO On - If RO module is optical fiber
Off - If RO module is copper
RI Module On
RO Module On
Error Code Display Off

Note If the base unit has an Optical Fiber Module installed, make sure that the optical fiber test cable is inserted in the receptacles.
The green LED will be lit next to the number of each LAM that is connected to the base unit and is operating correctly.
The yellow LED will be lit next to the number of each LAM that is defective or incorrectly connected to the base unit.

Remove the test cable from the Optical Fiber Modules, if present
Re-cable the base unit to the token-ring network
Notify the network administrator that the base unit is operational.
