Security

To control server access, you can implement several security measures, including password protection.

Password Overview: Two types ot passwords are available with the server: administrator and user. You can set both passwords using the Setup program and the System Configuration Utility program.

If you have a password set, Enter Password appears on the screen to prompt you. (The passwords do not appear on the screen as you type them.) If you enter the wrong password. Enter Password appears again. After three incorrect attempts, you must power-off the server and start again.

NOTE:

You can use any combination of up to seven characters (A-Z, a-z, and 0-9) for the passwords.
The system does not differentiate between lowercase and uppercase characters.
For additional security, do not make the user and administrator passwords the same. Keep a record of your password in a secure place.

The following information summarizes the levels of security with the different levels of password protection.

User password only ° User must enter password to complete the system startup. ° Password required to access the System Configuration Utility program and the Setup program, and to disable secure mode. ° User can access all System Configuration Utility program functions. Administrator password only ° No password required to start system. ° Password required to access Setup program. ° User can access the System Configuration Utility program, but password is required to access sensitive system configuration utility functions. ° Secure mode is not operational. Administrator and user passwords ° User must enter either password to complete the system startup. ° User must enter either password to access System Configuration Utility program or Setup program. ° Administrator password required to access sensitive system configuration utility functions. ° User password required to disable secure mode.

Administrator and user passwords	° User must enter either password to complete the system startup. ° User must enter either password to access System Configuration Utility program or Setup program. ° Administrator password required to access sensitive system configuration utility functions. ° User password required to disable secure mode.

You might prefer to set the administrator password in the Setup program before you configure the system. This will help secure the configuration data by restricting access to some System Configuration Utility program functions. See 'Administrator Password' for instructions for setting the administrator password.
