Symmetric Multiprocessors/Multiprocessing (Server 330)

Symmetric Multiprocessors/Multiprocessing

The PC Server 330 Type 8640 has a second upgradable processor socket on the processor board to support Symmetric Multiprocessors/Multiprocessing (SMP). The SMP capability extends processing performance by allowing tasks to be dispatched to the next available processor rather then being queued until the busy processor has completed its task.
The SMP capability also provides a level of high availability in that some operating systems run in a uni-processor mode if one of the processors should experience a failure. This function will allow the LAN to continue operation so that service can be scheduled at a non-critical time.

NOTE: If the optional processor is installed, the optional processor is the boot processor.
