Assembly
Unless otherwise noted, each of the
procedures in this section assumes the following:
The computer and any attached peripherals are turned off and the peripherals are disconnected from the computer's
I/O panel.
A part can be replaced by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.
When performing the procedures that require the display
assembly to be open, use a book or something similar to
support the display assembly. The angle of the display
assembly with respect to the bottom case should not exceed 180
degrees. Also assume that locations or directions relative to
the computer are as shown in computer
orientation unless otherwise specified in a
procedure.
Recommended Tools
Most of the procedures require the use of one or more
of the following tools:
Small flat-blade screwdriver
Number 1 magnetized Phillips-head screwdriver
Number 2 magnetized Phillips-head screwdriver
Wrist grounding strap
Needle-nose pliers
Small scribe (or Delrin screwdriver)
Open-end wrench (7/32 inch)
Screw
Identification and Tightening CAUTION: It is essential
that the correct length screw be used when reinstalling a
screw. Otherwise, hardware damage could result. Make sure that
the screw is properly aligned with its corresponding hole, and
avoid overtightening. Where applicable, information about
screws lengths is provided in illustrations. Before installing
a screw, match the screw to the screw length graphics provided
to check for correct length.
Precautionary
Measures Before starting to work on the computer,
perform the following steps in the sequence indicated:
1. Determine the power state of the computer.
If the power/standby indicator is on or blinking, go to step 2.
If the power/standby indicator is off, press the power button to turn on the computer and verify that it is not in
suspend-to-disk mode. Then proceed to step 2.
2. Turn off the computer and any attached peripherals.
3. Disconnect the computer and any attached peripherals from AC power sources to reduce the potential for personal
injury or shock.
4. Remove the main battery from the battery compartment.
Turn the computer over. With the back of the computer facing you, slide the battery release to the left and pull
the battery straight out.
5. Remove the hard-disk drive assembly.
Unscrew the two hard-disk drive screws T1 and T2 (the screws are captive in the hard-disk drive assembly). Then
pull the drive straight out of the computer.
6. Remove the diskette drive or optional battery from the diskette drive bay.
With the back of the computer facing you, slide the diskette drive release to the right and pull the diskette
drive or optional battery straight out.
7. Remove any PC Cards.
To remove a PC Card from the top connector, press the top eject button. To remove a PC Card from the bottom
connector, press the bottom eject button. To remove a type III card, press the bottom eject button.
8. To avoid possible damage to the computer from ESD, observe standard grounding procedures.
ZIF Connectors
CAUTION: ZIF connectors are fragile. To avoid breaking
the connectors, touch them carefully. Do not apply too much
pressure to the movable part of the connector when opening or
closing it. To disconnect an interface cable from a ZIF
connector, follow these steps:
1. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver under the movable part of the connector.
Carefully pry up first one end of the movable part of the connector and then the other end.
Releasing a ZIF Connector.
2. Pull gently upward on the movable part of the connector until it releases the interface cable.
3. Grasp the interface cable and pull it out of the connector.
To reconnect an interface cable to a ZIF connector,
follow these steps:
1. Use the flat-blade screwdriver to open the movable part of the ZIF connector.
2. Orient the end of the interface cable with the ZIF connector, and insert the end of the cable into the connector.
3. While holding the cable in place, close the ZIF connector.
To ensure a firm connection, make sure the ZIF connector
is completely closed.
Field-Replaceable

Parts and Assemblies-Bottom Half
The computer
is divided into six major parts and assemblies:
LCD assembly
Top case assembly
Keyboard
Speaker board
Trackball assembly
Board assembly
The sections that follow provide instructions for
removing and replacing these parts and assemblies.
LCD Assembly
LCD
Assembly Removal To remove the LCD assembly, follow
these steps:
1. Open the computer.
Press the latch and lift the LCD assembly.
2. Remove the memory module cover.
Use a Delrin screwdriver or scribe to pry up the cover.
3. Disconnect the three video connectors.
4. Close the computer.
5. Turn the computer around so you are facing the back of it, and remove the left and right hinge covers.
Using a Delrin screwdriver or a scribe to prevent scratching, pry out and pull up the hinge covers.
6. Remove the hinge screws H1, H2, H3, and H4.
There is a spacer on each hinge that comes loose when you remove each set of screws. There are EMI wires on
screws H1 and H4 that come loose when you remove each screw.
7. Remove EMI wire 1 and EMI wire 2 from hinge screws H2 and H3, respectively.
8. Remove screw H5.
9. Remove the LCD assembly from the computer.
Press the latch and lift the LCD assembly off the computer.
Top Case Assembly
Top
Case Assembly Removal
To remove the top
case assembly, follow these steps:
1. Remove the LCD assembly.
2. Remove screws M1 through M6; lift off the top heat sink.
3. Turn the computer over. Remove the four adhesive rubber pads and bottom screws
CAUTION: There are three different lengths of bottom
screws. Using the wrong length screw in a particular hole when
replacing the top case assembly could damage the hardware.
4. Turn the computer over, open the I/O panel cover, and remove the three upper screws (T11, T12, and T13) from the
I/O panel.
I/O Panel Screw Removal
5. Disconnect the speaker cable from the speaker connector on the board assembly.
6. Disconnect the keyboard cable from the board assembly.
Lift up the front end of the top case assembly. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the ZIF connector
securing the keyboard cable.
CAUTION: Lift the cable away only after the ZIF
connector is opened (see ZIF
Connectors). Pulling the cable from the connector damages
the conductive coating on the end of the cable.
7. Remove the keyboard.
8. Remove the speaker board.
Keyboard Keyboard
Removal
To remove the keyboard,
follow these steps:
1. Remove the top case assembly, and turn it over so its front side faces toward you.
2. Remove heat sink extension screws K11 and K12.
There are two spacers and an insulator that are part of the heat sink extension.
3. Remove screws K1 through K10.
NOTE: Do not remove the screw securing the speaker
board to the top case assembly.
4. Using a 7/32-inch open-end wrench, remove the standoff nut ST1.
5. Pull the keyboard up and to the right to free it from the top case assembly.
