Compaq Computer Corporation, in partnership with Free PC Corporation, is pleased to announce the new Compaq Presario 2285v. This minitower features a 333 (Performance Rated) MII Cyrix MMX Enhanced processor, a 32X Max CD-ROM Drive, a 56-Kbps V.90 PCI modem, and the Easy Access Internet Keyboard, and uses the same spare parts as the current Compaq
Presario 2286. Compaq support for the Presario 2285v is limited to Compaq software, utilities, hardware, troubleshooting, and repair. Free PC fully supports the Free PC User Interface and Internet Access. Additionally, the new model is covered by a Compaq One-Year Limited Warranty.

The Free PC proprietary software program enables the user to have limited use of the PC to demonstrate an advertisement program for Free PC. Compaq preinstalled operating system software is included. Application software may be installed or included on the CD-ROM shipped with the unit. The following is included:

• Applications: Microsoft Works 4.5, Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01, Compaq Diagnostics, Carbon Copy 32 Host Only (Remote Control), Compaq Service Connection, MS Money 98, Quicken 8.0, and McAfee VirusScan.

Free PC Software

Compaq Software
Compaq preinstalled software is fully supported by Compaq.  Customers must call 1-281-927-5272 to receive support.  There is no toll-free call for Free-PC customers.

QuickRestore

The Presario 2285v comes with a Compaq QuickRestore CD. The QuickRestore CD allows a Full Restore to completely restore the original factory image of the hard drive.

CAUTION: Full Restore completely reformats the hard drive and erases all personal files and applications. A Full Restore can be performed by booting from the QuickRestore CD and selecting the "Full Restore" option from the main menu.

IMPORTANT: Compaq recommends backing up all data prior to performing the Full Restore to ensure data does not become lost or corrupted. The Full Restore option of QuickRestore causes all data on the hard drive to be overwritten. Additionally, Compaq recommends the user make an emergency DOS diskette from the Utilities menu in QuickRestore to use if booting to DOS becomes necessary.

Compaq Diagnostics for Windows Version 2.16 (or later) is preinstalled on the Presario 2285v and can be accessed by clicking the Presario Support icon on the computer’s desktop.

The QuickRestore CD is available as an end-user-replaceable part with the Spare Part Number 357100-009.

The new Presario 2285v comes with the Easy Access Internet Keyboard.

The Internet Button Suite has four buttons. The button names and functions are listed below:

• Instant Internet – Pressing this button launches the user’s Internet browser, and opens to the Compaq Website www.compaq.com/ athome/exploration (U.S. only) or a website scheduled to be online in the near future (outside of the U.S.) that will be customized by region.
• Instant Search – Pressing this button links the user directly to a search page to help them locate information on the Internet. The default search engine can be reprogrammed to another search engine from the Compaq website.
• Instant E-Mail – Pressing this button launches the Microsoft Outlook Express e-mail application. This button can be reprogrammed to launch any e-mail application the user chooses.
• Secure E-Commerce (U.S. only) or Featured Website – This button provides a different feature depending on whether the unit was purchased within the U.S. or elsewhere.
• Secure E-Commerce (U.S. only) – Pressing this button launches a site specifically designed to offer the customer a safe shopping experience.
• Featured Website (Elsewhere) – Pressing this button links the user to a localized electronic shopping site.
